The Call of Abraham

The Call of Abraham

Gen 12:4  So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. Gen 12:5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.  Abraham was 75 when he was called. In the rest of the chapter Abraham goes into Canaan and all the way into Egypt. Genesis 13 Abraham and lot separate. Genesis 14 Abraham saves lot and meets Melchizedek.

The Covenant or Promise

Gen 15:13  And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; Gen 15:14  And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. Gen 15:15  And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. Gen 15:16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. Gen 15:17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces. Gen 15:18 In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates: Gen 15:19 The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites, Gen 15:20  And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, Gen 15:21  And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.  This is the promise made to Abraham at 75 years of age.

The Exodus

Exo 12:40 Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years. Exo 12:41  And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

The Law and the Promise

Gal 3:16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, and to seeds, as of many; but as of one, and to thy seed, which is Christ. Gal 3:17  And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. Gal 3:18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.

The covenant was confirmed before God in Christ when Abraham was 75. The law was 430 years after.
